Managing Pain

The American Dental Association estimates that 12 to 14 million people, or one-third of the population in the United States, have diabetes, but only one-half of these individuals are diagnosed. Studies have shown that diabetics are more susceptible to the development of oral infections and periodontal disease than those who do not have diabetes.
There are many methods for relieving oral pain. They include:
  • Ice packs on the affected area.
  • Avoiding hard candy or ice.
  • Avoiding sleeping on your stomach.
Dentists use a wide array of pain management tools, including:
  • Anesthetics such as Novocaine.
  • Analgesics such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • Sedatives, including a procedure known as "conscious sedation" or general sedation (also known as "deep sedation").
